About us
Who we are and what we do
The Czech Vacuum Society (abbreviated as CVS) is an interest group of experts in the field of vacuum physics, technology and their applications. It is a member of the international vacuum society IUVSTA. The CVS organizes regular events, in particular the Summer School of Vacuum Technology and the meeting of users and manufacturers of vacuum technology PRAGOVAC. Members and other interested parties are informed about the activities of the CVS through the CVS Newsletter.
Main goals and mission
✔ Support for education and research
ČVS is actively involved in organizing conferences, seminars and professional lectures. It creates a space for meetings and exchange of the latest knowledge between academics, students and industry specialists.
✔ Connecting experts
Thanks to its extensive membership base, ČVS creates a network of contacts across universities, research institutes and private companies. This makes it easier for members to establish cooperation and share know-how.
✔ Support for innovation in industry
Vacuum technology plays a key role in many sectors, for example in the production of semiconductors, in the research of new materials or in nanotechnologies. ČVS therefore strives to bring innovations and solutions that will help Czech companies gain a competitive advantage in global markets.
✔ Raising awareness of vacuum technologies
The company participates in the popularization of scientific knowledge in the form of lectures, professional publications and educational events for high school and university students.
Membership in the Czech Vacuum Society
The CVS is open to individuals and institutions from a wide range of fields. Members include scientists, students, engineers, technicians or managers who specialize in vacuum systems or use them in their practice.
Anyone interested in vacuum technology and physics can become a member of the ČVS; the annual membership fee is currently 100 CZK, for students and pensioners (over 65 years old) 20 CZK, and for collective members 1000 CZK. Send your membership fees by transfer to account no. 482836803/0300 (just write your name and year of membership in the message for the recipient). You can find the application in the Documents section.
Benefits of membership:
- Access to the latest information in the field of vacuum physics and technology – from research activities to industrial applications.
- Networking and establishing cooperation – participation in conferences and events organized by the company, the opportunity to develop contacts in the country and abroad.
- Education – discounted admission to seminars, trainings and workshops with leading Czech and foreign experts.
- Professional consulting – support in solving technical challenges in research or practice.
CVS Newsletter
The CVS publishes its Newsletter twice a year. On its website, members can read about organized and planned events, as well as news in the field of vacuum physics and technology and their applications. Most contributions are published in Czech, but exceptionally we also publish contributions in English.
The spring issue of the Newsletter is traditionally dedicated to contributions at the Summer School of Vacuum Technology. The autumn issue is usually published during the Pragovac period.
Jiří Drbohlav is responsible for the content of the Newsletters. Anyone interested in publishing contributions or placing advertisements can contact him.
CVS members receive the Newsletters printed by mail free of charge. All participants of the LŠVT always receive the spring issue. Other interested non-members can contact the ČVS secretariat.
Special Newsletter of the Czech Vacuum Society – Volume 29, Issue 1 (2021): TRIBUTE TO LIBOR PÁTÝ
For the first time in history, the Czech Vacuum Society dedicates an entire issue of the Newsletter of the Czech Vacuum Society to one person, Prof. Libor Páté, who was at the origin of the field of vacuum physics in Czechoslovakia. The Department of Surface and Plasma Physics of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University also participated in the publication of this issue.

International cooperation
The Czech Vacuum Society cooperates with international organizations that focus on vacuum technologies, solid state physics and surface engineering. This gives members access to contacts and knowledge from all over the world, which helps develop new projects and innovations in the Czech Republic. We are a member of IUVSTA.
We also regularly co-organize the international conference JVC (Joint Vacuum Conference).
Vacuum
The International Space Station orbits the Earth at an altitude of about 400 km. It flies in an imperfect vacuum with a lot of residual atmosphere. This causes the station to experience low aerodynamic drag and must occasionally correct its orbit.
